Zachary Macaulay

father : John Macaulay
Mother : Margaret Campbell of Ardchattan
02 May 1768 born in Inveraray
1784 went to Jamaica aged 16 years

  • worked on a plantation
  • become plantation manager

1792 returned to England.
1793 went to Sierra Leone and was Governor there until 1799.
26 August 1799 married Selina Mills, the daughter of a Bristol merchant, and had nine children including Thomas Babington Macaulay, the poet, essayist and politician.
1823 formed the Anti Slavery Society with others.
13 May 1838 Died
Memorial to Zachary in Westminster Abbey although he is not buried there. The bust displays a figure of a slave kneeling, along with an inscription " Am I not a Man and a Brother? "
