The Highlands And Islands Emigration Society

We are creating the skeleton of this wiki for the community, near and far, to work together to develop an encyclopedia of the natural and social history of Ardchattan.

In Ardchattan there were few of the wholesale "clearances" that were seen further north, but over the centuries starvation, economic opportunities and changes in land management forced many to leave their ancestral lands and find a new life elsewhere.
It is also clear from the 1800's census that people were on the move a lot, throughout the area, between counties, and then further afield.

Emigration Records
There are unfortunately very few records in National Records of Scotland (NRS) which list names of emigrants. The Colonial Office, based in London, was responsible for emigration in the 19th century and its records are held by The National Archives (London) (TNA). They also hold the surviving outward passenger lists from 1890.
