Oban World War One Roadshow event September 2016

Scotlands War - World War One Roadshow : Oban : September 9th - 10th

A two-day event will be held in Oban on Friday 9th September and Saturday 10th September as part of a number of roadshows being organised by Argyll and Bute Council to commemorate World War One.
Yvonne McEwan from Edinburgh University will start the event on Friday 9th September with a talk in Oban Library at 7.00pm about the Scotland’s War Website.
As well as leading this interesting and innovative project, Yvonne is also an expert in family and military history.
People in Oban, Lorne and the Isles are therefore invited to take along their family stories, artefacts and photos from the Great War to Oban Library on Saturday 10th September between 10am and 1pm where Yvonne will provide help in identifying items, learning how to find free information online and much, much more.
As part of the work being done by the Council to mark the centenary, they also want to hear about stories from the home front, as well as of those who fought on the front line. So whether you have a story about a woman in your family who took on a traditional man's job and became a bus conductor or whether you have a photograph of your grandmother milking cows and helping with the harvest, we would like you to come along.

following this event the Oban Library will be delighted for you to take in any memories or memorabilia to be scanned, photographed, otherwise recorded so that it can be included in the local and national record to commemorate the immense contribution that all of Scotland made to WW1

The Council’s Policy Lead for Community and Culture, Councillor Robin Currie, said, “This event is just one of a number of events being organised by Argyll and Bute Council, in partnership with the World War One Steering Group, to mark the centenary of the First World War and remember those who sacrificed their lives for our country.
“There are many people who have artefacts, photographs and various other memorabilia from World War One that have been passed on to them down the generations. Many of these people are unsure of the history of these items and Yvonne’s visit is the perfect opportunity for people with these things to go along and find out their story.”
Please come along to one or both of the events, and contribute to Scotland’s knowledge of its contribution to The Great War.
