Migration

People have been moving in and out of Ardchattan for millenia

The land was recolonised after the last Ice Age activity, first by the ecology, and then by man from the areas that had already healed.
Since then there is evidence that people were trading up and down the western seaboard with peoples from far and wide.

In more recent times, the census records illustrate just how active people were, coming from all parts of Scotland, and even England
And we lost many thousands to the "new worlds" over centuries. This was not a Jacobite area, so we did not see the dramatic clearances of other parts, but hard times and increasing opportunities elsewhere drove people to leave.

There is much to learn about these movements, what triggered them, who went, and when.

1775 - 77 from Appin, and 50 from Glenorchy left to settle in North Carolinas .. (source unknown .. any from Ardchattan?)
Did we have assisted movement from our landowners in the potato famine, supported by the Highlands and Islands Emigration society.

Inverness advertiser of 1853 stated that nearly 3.5 million emigrants had left Scotland since 1815 - end of Napoleonic wars … 1.8 million in the few years between 1846 -1853.
Starvation, poverty, persuasion were all reasons to leave.
Former soldiers were commonly amongst these with little to survive at home, kelp farming collapsed after the wars with France as they could supply cheaper.

Religion was another significant reason for leaving Scotland to live elsewhere
