Clan MacPhedran
http://www.mcphedran.com/
MacPhedran is an uncommon name : with some different spellings : McPhederan; McPheidran; MacPheidirean; McPherdon;
They are closely associated with LochFyneside, Loch Awe and down to Campbeltown, with stories woven in our heritage.
Locally they are associated with the area around Ferlochan / Park / Rhugarbh - the latter being where an ancient smithy is.
This Poem is very old, telling of the making of arrows - reportedly for Campbell of Argyll
Bogha dh'iubhar Easragain,
Ite firein Locha Treig,
Ceir Bhuidhe Bhaile nan gaillean,
Smeoirn o'n cheard MacPheiderean.
Bow of the yew of Easragan, (Now Blarcreen - were at least 6 yew trees there)
Feather of the eagle of Loch Treig,
The yellow wax of Baille-nan-gaillean,
Arrowhead from the craftsman MacPheidirean.
(from Park Farm / Ferlochan / Rhugarbh, Benderloch)
There are all sorts of different attributions for this description of the arrow makers for the Argyll Campbells .. but the skills may be very much older, before the Campbells were formed.
The Scotlands Yew Tree project is investigating the ancient yew trees around Scotland and have been to Blarcreen to research the heritage.
