Corporal Ewen Andrew MacColl, born on 29th January 1892 at Ardchattan, Argyll, was the son of Hugh MacColl, a Gamekeeper, and Ann McIntyre, of Barcaldine.
His siblings were Duncan, Johann, Hughina, Catherine, Alexander and Gavin.
Before enlisting in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders at Ledaig on 19 December 1910, he was employed as a Gamekeeper by the Trustees of Mrs Ogilvie.
He fell ill whilst training at Bedford and died of measles and meningitis there on 17th December 1914. He is buried at Foster Hill Road Cemetery, Bedford.
He was one of the nine men of his battalion who died of disease at Bedford.

Brother in law to Donald Currie 1883-1914 who died the month earlier - so his wife Catherine lost her husband, and brother in a few weeks, with 2 toddlers to care for.
