Introduction to Breadalbane
The title of Earl of Breadalbane (see wikipedia page for more details) was created in 1681 for Sir John Campbell, 5th Baronet, of Glenorchy. He had previous held the title of Earl of Caithness having acquired the lands as principal creditor of the previous encumbant whose successor successfully reclaimed title and property. Sir John Campbell was created on Lord Glenorchy, Benederaloch, Ormelie and Weick, Viscount of Tay and Paintland, and Earl of Breadalbane and Holland on 13 August 1681.
Breadalbane was a junior branch of the clan Campbell clan; commonly represented Argyll in parliament in the 1700's;

What were Breadalbane lands in Ardchattan?
The lands owned by the Breadalbane estate have variously extended into modern day Benderloch as well as deep in to Loch and Glen Etive. The forests of the Glen were long part of the estate.
Understanding where these boundaries lay over the centuries is just one of our significant challenges in understanding the parish history.
