Sir David Baird, BT. Buys Castle
Sir David Baird, Bt. Port Appin, Argyll is the new owner of Lochnell Castle, Ledaig
This was disclosed at the sale of the Lochnell Estate, which took place in the Argyllshire Gathering Hall, Oban, on Thursday last.
Prior to the sale Sir David also bought by private arrangement a number of other parts of the estate, including Lochnell Home Farm, Balure Farm, the gamekeepers cottage at Ardrannoch, together with another cottage and ground at Ardrannoch and the woodland areas of Druim na h-ath and Garbh-ard.
When these purchases were disclosed on Thursday by Mr Bone of the Leeds Office of Jackson-Stops and staff, auctioneers and land agents, who had received instructions to dispose of the property by the owner Captain J. F. C. Cameron D.S.O M.C he intimated that the remainder of the estate would be sold by auction as a single unit.
After considerable bidding this went for £4,000 to Mr James Colquhoun, Colquhoun Arms Ardlui. Afterwards Mr Colquhoun announced that certain lots would be immediately sold and this was done.
The following lots were purchased :-
Kintaline farm by the tenants Mr and Mrs D. C. Campbell for £700
the outer lodge by J MacLucas for £250
Shenvalie Cottage by Hume Maclean for £150
woodland at Ard Bhatan by the Captain of Dunstaffnage for £120
The salmon and sea trout fishing in the sea ex adverso of the whole estate was sold after spirited bidding to Captain Donald Colquhoun for £1000
The sale caused considerable interest and the purchase of property by existing tenants was warmly applauded
Two lots of woodland were withdrawn as the bigs did not reach the sellers reserve price and one other lot received no bid at all.
It was disclosed by Mr Neil MacKinnon who was acting at the sale on behalf of his firm D M MacKinnon and Co for a number of clients that a private offer by Mrs C Polson for Lochaber Cottage had been accepted.
