Archibald Black was born in Port Ramsay on Lismore, moved to Glasgow and married, then returned to Taynuilt, living at Brochroy and then to Connel when he took over from his brother Duncan who was a butcher.
Archibald built up the business and is a Grocer in the 1891 and 1901 census, living at Hawthornbank and Ornsay Villa (both by Achaleven) respectively.
When the railway branch from Ballachulish to Connel ferry was completed, it was clear that the new village of Benderloch needed a general store, and so he built one.
