275 years ago today, the Jacobite Rising of 1745 commenced with the raising of the Royal Standard at Glenfinnan. The Appin catechist Peter King conveyed intelligence to the government about the environment and buildup of the event, including numbers and movements of troops. The catechist's intel report, given to Lord Advocate Robert Craigie, tells of the few regiments that were present and the many that were expected, and that 'the men were not Pleased with their Swords but their Guns were Good'.
Peter King's fine details of troop movements and knowledge of personalities in the area really brings the moment to life. He describes that 'Inverawe’s Men Came to the Isle of Lesmore in A Bark with Two Masts belonging to Mr Stevenson Son to the Minister of Ardchattan'.
