1603 The Union of the Crowns: James VI of Scotland becomes James I of England.
24 March 1603 : Queen Elizabeth I of England dies.
26 March 1603 : James VI of Scotland is told in Edinburgh that he is now also King James I of England.
The crowns of Scotland and England are unified, James VI calling himself "King of Great Britain"
The Stewart dynasty dominates, with the spelling becoming increasingly altered to "Stuart".
