Muckairn was a separate Parish from circa 1578 until 1637. It was a United Parish with Ardchattan from 1637 to 1649. It was independent again from 1649 to 1661 when it was again united with Ardchattan. In 1829 it again became independent until it was linked with Dalavich & Kilchrenan in 1981.

The following description of life in Islay is taken from the book “Islay The Land of The Lordship” by David Caldwell published by Birlinn in 2008. Whilst, obviously, not immediately relevant to here it is an interesting reflection on life in Argyll of the time.

“After the acquisition of Islay by the Campbells of Cawdor in 1614, new blood was introduced to the island, most obviously in the form of Campbell lairds and tacksmen to supplant the Clan Donald and its supporters.” He later states:- “The majority of Ilich, … either farmed their lands as joint tenants of the laird or other gentlemen, or were subtenants or cottagers, working as servants or labourers, for other tenants. Some of these combined a trade or craft with the growing of a few crops and the raising of a few animals”.
At the top of the landholding tree would be a laird who would rarely be a lord. Below the laird were the “gentlemen” who “set their holdings to their own tenants. Many of them would have lived of their rents rather than undertake any extensive farming on their own behalf”.
